Woman fumes as boyfriend's pointless bathroom routine hikes up their bills

Aug 19, 2023

A woman was left 'seething' each time her partner took a bath because she imagined her money 'evaporating out of the window' - but he didn't see the issue with it

There's nothing quite like having a nice hot bath or shower at the end of a tough day to try and relax and unwind, but many people will have noticed their bills rising a concerning amount so will be opting to take shorter showers and avoiding baths altogether in order to save money.

One woman was left angered at her boyfriend's attitude towards showers and baths, however, as he "wastes" the hot water, and she pays the bills, but she explained that every time she tries to reason with him, he doesn't listen, and she likened the situation to her "hard-earned money evaporating" due to his bathing habits.

She took to Reddit to explain that her "boyfriend has a bad back and baths help with recovery", but she thought he was rinsing her. She wrote: "Gas and electric are at an all-time high (I'm in the UK) and I pay the bills. I have asked him not to waste the hot water in this way but he refuses to accept that it's wasting anything.

"I've tried reasoning with him but he simply doesn't agree with my understanding of physics. Each time he runs a bath and then sits around for up to an hour, I'm seething with irritation, imagining my hard-earned money evaporating and floating out the bathroom window. Am I the a***hole?"

In the comments, some people tried to work out other ways that he could enjoy a bath, and she could save money. One wrote: "I have a bad back too. Tell him to run it cool enough to get in, then run hot water in to fill up after. That way he gets a warmer bath than he would have otherwise and there's less hot water wastage. You can also set your boiler temperature to lower. You should be able to find instructions on Google if you can find what model you have."

Someone else said the woman wasn't unreasonable for wanting her boyfriend to help her to save money. They wrote: "Not the a**hole. The phrase 'watching my money evaporate and float out of the window' was a really nice metaphor good job." Another complained about their boyfriend's habits as they said he leaves water running in the sink "while walking around brushing his teeth for 10 minutes."
